Movie Night This Friday, March 8th!

Please join us in the Community Room at the Round Valley Library Commons at 7 P.M. on Friday, March 8th, or 2 P.M. Sunday March 10th for a screening of the film, Climate Refugees.

As the impact of global climate change grows, in many parts of the world the key question is no longer how to prevent the consequences of this threat to the environment, but what to do as people struggle to deal with the effects of mankind’s carelessness. Parts of the world that were once habitable are slowly but dramatically changing, and the people that once lived on islands slowly submerging under rising oceans and plains that are turning to deserts have to find somewhere else to go. What is do be done with the people who have been displaced by climate change, and which nations should take them in? Filmmaker Michael Nash explores this side of the climate change debate in the documentary Climate Refugees; filmed over the course of two years, the film examines the causes of climate change, nations that are suffering most from its effects, and the political, economic and environmental issues behind moving the people who are becoming the first victims of this crisis.

Sunday Matinee Movie

Please join us in the Community Room at the Round Valley Library Commons at 2 P.M. on Sunday, February 10th, for a screening of the film,The Money Fix.

Money is at the intersection of nearly every aspect of modern life. Most of us take the monetary system for granted, but it has a profound and largely misunderstood influence on our lives.

The film examines economic patterning in both the human and the natural worlds, and through this lens we learn how we can empower ourselves by localizing and redesigning aspects of our economy at the community level.

We showed this movie back in December and viewers requested an encore, which is why we’ve scheduled this special matinee.

MOVIE NIGHT, 2 showings – Friday and Sunday, next week!

Please join us in the Community Room at the Round Valley Library Commons at 7 P.M. on Friday, January 11th, for a screening of the film, GrowthBusters: Hooked on GrowthWe have also scheduled an encore showing Sunday afternoon, at 2:00 P.M.

Water shortages, hunger, peak oil, species extinction, and even increasing depression are all symptoms of a deeper problem – addiction to unending growth in a world that has limits.GrowthBusters: Hooked on Growth goes way beyond prescribing Band-Aids to slow the bleeding. This film examines the cultural barriers that prevent us from reacting rationally to the evidence that current levels of population and consumption are unsustainable.
It asks why the population conversations are so difficult to have. Why it’s more important to our society to have economic growth than clean air. Why communities seek and subsidize growth even when it destroys quality of life and increases taxes.
Our growth-centric system is broken. It’s not providing the happiness or the prosperity we seek. But that’s good news; it means a shift to a sustainable model will be good for us. We’ll be happier and more prosperous!

Sustainable Movie Night!

Please join us in The Community Room at the Round Valley Library Commons at 7 P.M. on Friday, November 9th, for a screening of the film, The Clean Bin Project. (Canada: 1 hr, 15 mins.)

Is it possible to live completely waste free? In this multi-award winning, festival favorite, partners Jen and Grant go head to head in a competition to see who can swear off consumerism and produce the least garbage over the course of one year. Their light-hearted competition is set against a darker examination of the problem of waste in our throw-away society.
The Clean Bin Project presents the serious topic of waste reduction with optimism and humor. Captivating interviews with renowned artist Chris Jordan and TED Lecturer Captain Charles Moore make this film a fun and inspiring call to individual action that speaks to crowds of all ages.  It’s educational and entertaining!

(USA: 2012, 87 minutes)

Biotechnology is changing the way farming is done all over the world. Advocates believe the “New Green Revolution” is the only way to provide sufficient food for the world’s growing population while opponents raise environmental concerns and fear that GMOs drive small-scale farmers off the land. Bitter Seeds explores the controversy — from a village in India that uses genetically modified seeds to U.S. government agencies that promote them.
